Best Of The Best: October 2016 Horse Racing Recap

Sun Chariot Stakes

Alice Springs again produced a top class performance, though not as easy as her wins in the Matron and Falmouth, maybe she is slowing down a bit now towards the seasons end. She is being talked of as a Champions Day or Breeders Cup runner, but I will be treating her with caution this season now. Next year though she should continue in this top class form. It was good to see Always Smile run well, she was also well supported just before the off. She has improved and could pick up a similar race before the seasons end. The third horse Ervedya is to be retired now, quite rightly, she hasnt really improved from last year. Dont know what happened to Volta, very disappointing.

Arc De Triomphe

Quite a compulsive Arc with lots of angles to take away. Great feat by Ballydoyle filling the first three places, Highland Reel and Order Of St George running much better than I had envisaged. The winner Found deserved to win a race like this, I had my doubts about her stamina, which were unfounded. Incredibly consistent, improving all season and well fancied by Ryan Moore saying beforehand that this had been her target all season. Champions Day is only two weeks away, so I guess that she will be next seen in the Breeders Cup Turf. Postponed seemed to run a bit flat, I thought that he would run better than this, so now think that I may have overrated him a bit. Hope he goes for the Breeders Cup Turf also to give him a chance of redeeming himself.

Champion Stakes

Well deserved win by Almanzor, the best horse in the race, I’m looking forward to next season when he is sure to be campaigned sensibly and must have a great chance in the Arc. As expected, Found understandably seemed to be suffering from her exertions when winning the Arc, great run nevertheless and she lost nothing in defeat. Jack Hobbs headed the remainder, and should be a force when back over 1m4f, maybe Hong Kong is an option.

QEII Stakes

Another Group One for Minding, thats seven now, not bad for a 3YO, hopefully she will be back again next season. Ribchester will be back next season, and hopefully he will have matured a bit by then. He didnt really settle and ran a bit in snatches, as he did in the Marois. He got away with it there and was running on well in the end here. Can only get better. Another good run from Lightning Spear, just not quite good enough at this level.

Notebook

I have removed Kings Fete from the list as he hasnt proven to be as good as I expected that he may be after a couple of defeats this month. Though I have added a couple who I feel sure will progress well next season. Aclaim was pretty impressive in the G2 Challenge Stakes at Newmarket ridden by Frankie, he has improved significantly this season. Also I have started taking an interest in 2YOs and Rhododendron looks like she will take high honors next year, no prizes for originality there though.

The following is my current list.

Aclaim

Rhododendron

Postponed

Qemah

Limato

Mutakayyef

Royal Artillery

Almanzor
